This and the following years will be eventful for us folkies. Who wouldn’t be excited to have a bunch of singer-songwriter movies coming our way? The first one out, from director John Carney who gave us the award-winning movie Once, was well-received by viewers. Begin Again stars Keira Knightley as a musician left on her own in the big city who meets a disgraced record executive played by Mark Ruffalo. “From this chance encounter emerges an enchanting portrait of a mutually transformative collaboration, set to the soundtrack of a summer in New York City.” (The Weinstein Company) Watch the trailer below.

In the next film we’ll see Anne Hathaway, but in a non-singing role. It features folk musician Johnny Flynn as a, well, folk musician. I am both curious and delighted because…Johnny Flynn, and I’ve never seen him act yet. The trailer for Song One below.

This last clip is not a trailer, yet it may well be a preview of the coming Hank Williams biography I Saw the Light. We all know Tom Hiddleston is a talented actor who can do pretty much eveything we want him to: sing, dance, do impersonations, read poetry. Then he showed up at Wheatland Music Festival and sing Move It On Over by Hank Williams. He’ll have to work on a lot of things for this role, like the accent, singing style, and mannerisms. Otherwise, fans of Williams will butcher him. We hope his talent for impersonation won’t disappoint.

As a follow-up to the previous post about kudyapi (2-stringed lute), I give you the master himself, Manlilikha ng Bayan Samaon Sulaiman , a folk music artist from Maganoy, Maguindanao. He was awarded the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (National Living Treasure Award) in 1993. As envisioned under R.A. 7355, “Manlilikha ng Bayan” shall mean a citizen engaged in any traditional art uniquely Filipino whose distinctive skills have reached such a high level of technical and artistic excellence and have been passed on to and widely practiced by the present generation in his/her community with the same degree of technical and artistic competence. ~ NCCA He died in May of last year. Mostly self-taught, his works have been in 25 solo exhibitions and various group shows for the past 30 years. Victor Secuya Art, the website, is Folkerie’s first undertaking into web development. It highlights a portfolio of Secuya’s selected painting series and sculptures, while his love for the written word is given particular emphasis with sample essays from his books and quotes as accents across pages. Launched on March 22, the site also includes photos of Secuya’s studio — aptly called The Sanctuary — a place of peace and quiet within the bustling city of Davao.

One of the things we needed for our mission house in Bajada was a bell. Our religious community uses the bell for our wake up call in the morning. We also use the bell to gather the members of our community, like for example at meal time and prayer time. And so I tried to look for a bell in Aldevinco. I was hoping to find one that is “Mindanao inspired” and at the same time functional – one that would fit the purpose. Then I chanced upon this souvenir store that sells all sorts of “antiques” or old items. They have a wide range of items for sale – from small furniture, to house decors and traditional musical instruments of Mindanao.
